Dicykan – Stability and Protection for Sunglasses

How does an intermediate from BASF help make the lenses and frames of high-quality sunglasses sturdier and protect the wearer's eyes from UV radiation? A new film in BASF's "Creating Chemistry" series answers this question. In four minutes, the film illustrates BASF's collaboration with Evonik Industries and gives an impression of the excellent capabilities of the materials used to make the glasses.

Creative freedom and ease of processing

In an interesting manner, the film throws into relief a plastic material that Evonik makes from raw materials which include BASF's intermediate Dicykan. This plastic is more resistant to stress cracking and abrasion, features better UV and chemical resistance and weighs less than alternative materials. The use of Dicykan causes crystals that act like mechanical reinforcements to form in the plastic as it is produced. The result is a transparent high-performance plastic material that Evonik sells under the Trogamid CX brand.
