Shell and BMW M Motorsport Renew Partnership

Shell Lubricants and BMW M Motorsport have extended their long-running partnership, announcing a renewal that deepens collaboration on research and development and places sustainable fluid technologies at the center of both motorsport and passenger vehicle programs.

Under the renewed agreement, Shell continues as BMW M Motorsport’s official Premium Technology, Innovation, and Energy Partner, with an expanded R&D mandate that now includes circular economy approaches to lubricant formulation.

The first tangible output of the renewed collaboration arrived at the race itself: the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 competed at the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours using a newly formulated engine oil built with re-refined base oil (RRBO) derived from used oil streams.

Co-developed by Shell and BMW M Motorsport for the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, this new and exclusive more sustainable racing lubricant aims to reduce the oils environmental footprint by integrating circular economy principles, through the reuse of high-quality base oils derived from used oil streams.

“This weekend at Le Mans was about more than just racing; it was about showing the world how progress advances through winning partnerships,” said Jason Wong, Global Executive Vice President, Shell Lubricants.
