Röhm Commissions Polymerization Plant for Plexiglas in Shanghai

Röhm expands its presence for MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) and PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) production in Asia. China, as the world's largest market for these products, represents a prime opportunity for Röhm's specialized innovations. This development represents a pivotal point in the company's broader expansion efforts.

Röhm has achieved a significant milestone in executing its growth strategy by increasing its PMMA production capabilities. In an event attended by staff, collaborators, and government officials, Hans-Peter Hauck, the COO of Röhm, formally inaugurated the facility. “The expansion of our global PMMA capacities is an important step on our way to becoming the leading methacrylate Verbund,” said Hauck.

China has the largest MMA and PMMA markets in the world. Röhm has been providing the Chinese market with Plexiglas (known as Acrylite in the Americas) molding materials since the 1990s. In an effort to enhance responsiveness and reliability, Röhm established its own facility in Shanghai in 2008 to better serve local customers."Our business has grown steadily," says Benjamin Ling, Röhm President Asia. "As our customers and the Chinese market have grown, so have we, and we have steadily expanded our capacity."

Röhm also provides customized innovations developed specifically for the Asian market including Plexiglas Hi-Gloss for automotive pillar trim and Plexiglas Resist for electronic displays. Major uses for PMMA include electromobility in the automotive sector and the lighting industry. Plexiglas is well-suited for these applications where durability, resistance to weather and UV, color fastness, high luminosity, and transparency as well as hardness and scratch resistance are key. The brand celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.
