DSM has signed a framework technology partnership agreement with Toyota Motorsport (TMG), under which it will act as the Japanese company’s preferred material and product provider. Financial details of the non-exclusive deal were not disclosed.

The agreement involves all DSM businesses that supply materials and technology to the automotive sector, notably engineering plastics, Dyneema ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (uhmwPE) fiber and 3D printing, including Somos for stereolithography (SLA) and other technologies such as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).

TMG will develop and pilot new engineering solutions using DSM’s high-performance materials and products, while it will also test and evaluate DSM products and act as a test user for defined projects.

“DSM offers an array of materials that are ideally suited to high-performance applications in the automotive arena, and we believe that working together with TMG we will be able to expand our horizons even further,” said DSM Dyneema’s president, Golnar Motahari Pour.

Pour noted that DSM’s thermoplastics such as Stanyl, ForTii and Akulon are already used in automotive applications, especially under the hood. She pointed out that the company is also moving quickly into thermoset composites, introducing Dyneema Carbon last year to advance the potential for lightweighting and durability.

Gerard Winstanley, manager of future production technologies & processes, fabrication and additive manufacturing at TMG, added: “Our relationship has developed strongly over the last few years and significantly enhanced our capabilities as well as contributing to DSM’s product development. TMG’s mission is to push the boundaries of automotive technology for motorsport and road car applications both for Toyota projects and also those of our third-party customers. We believe this partnership will support that.”
