Carbios & Sasa Discuss Licensing PET Biorecycling Facility

Carbios, a company specializing in biological technologies for the life cycle of plastic and textiles, and Sasa, a manufacturer of polyester and related products, have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore the potential acquisition of a license for Carbios’ PET biorecycling technology by Sasa.

This licensing agreement would enable Sasa to build and run a 100,000-ton capacity enzymatic depolymerization plant in Adana, Turkey, producing polyester products from various waste sources. Carbios’ biorecycling technology would help Sasa meet the growing demand for sustainable materials in the textile industry, especially in Europe.

Less than 1% of textile waste is currently recycled into new textile fibers. Still, with European regulations pushing for at least 20% recycled fibers by 2030, demand for recycled polyester is expected to rise, positioning Turkey as a key producer alongside Asian countries. Carbios has developed an enzymatic depolymerization technology for efficient, solvent-free recycling of PET plastic and textile waste, and this new Letter of Intent for a potential licensing agreement in Europe marks another step in the global expansion of Carbios’ technology.

"With the creation of a major PET yarn and fiber manufacturing capacity on a European scale, we believe Turkey will play a pivotal role in the expanding textile market," commented Emmanuel Ladent, CEO of Carbios. "Partnering with Sasa, a leader in polyester production, is a natural fit for Carbios’ international ambitions for licensing our biorecycling technology, and will contribute to a more circular and sustainable textile industry.

"As a leading producer of polyester, it’s our duty to pave the way in terms of sustainability and environmental responsibility," added M. Kemal Öz, General Manager, Sasa. "Sasa needs to be a part of the recycling business and our partnership with Carbios reinforces our commitment to innovation to advance a circular economy for textiles.
