As in most other industries, digitalization is currently of paramount importance in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries—in response to the acute shortage of skilled workers and in order to remain competitive in the future. There is still potential for expansion, especially in production and in the field, not least because potentially explosive environments pose particular challenges. Durabook's rugged and ATEX-certified R8-EX and U11I-EX tablets are specially designed for use in ATEX Zone 2/22.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Process Industry

Many companies are already successfully leveraging the advantages of technology and data in research and development as well as in quality assurance and control. In production and in the field, however, high requirements, complex IT, and strict safety standards make it difficult to introduce digital solutions—especially in potentially explosive areas. Special devices are therefore required for use in ATEX zones, for example, to offer external support, record and retrieve critical information in the field, and perform diagnostics with the highest accuracy.

Powerful EX Tablets for the Production Area

Durabook is known for its rugged mobile computing solutions. With its EX models, the company offers two devices that are both robust and explosion-proof, making them suitable for explosive production areas or sensitive laboratory environments.

With its 8-inch display, the R8-EX is very light, handy, and practical for use in confined production halls or occasional use. Despite its compact design, it offers powerful 12th generation Intel Core processors and a battery life of up to 16 hours – ideal for a long day's work in the field.

The U11I-EX offers a larger 11.6-inch display, more computing power, and numerous connectivity options such as Thunderbolt 4 for backing up large production data to an SSD. It is aimed at users who want a full-fledged work device that offers security, computing power, and ease of use.

ATEX Zone 2/22 and MIL-STD-810H Certified

Hardware used in the chemical industry and in drug manufacturing requires ATEX certification. This guarantees that there are no ignition sources, hot surfaces, or electrical discharges that could have devastating effects in potentially explosive atmospheres. Durabook tablets meet the requirements for ATEX Zone 2/22. In addition, the devices comply with the military standard MIL-STD-810H, are IP66 certified, can withstand drops from heights of up to 1.8 meters, and function reliably at extreme temperatures between –29 °C and +63 °C.

Coolfinity Technology Reduces the Risk of Explosion

While conventional laptops and tablets usually have a fan installed to prevent the sensitive components inside from overheating, in hazardous areas fanless designs provide additional security. Durabook relies on its specially developed Coolfinity thermal solution. The integrated passive cooling system dissipates heat via the housing.

Smart Features for Smooth Operation

Hot-swappable batteries enable uninterrupted work in multi-shift operations. Extensive interfaces such as USB 3.2, LAN, RS232, HDMI, and optional barcode scanners facilitate integration into existing systems. In addition, Durabook's proprietary DynaVue® technology with high screen brightness ensures optimal readability – whether in direct sunlight or poor lighting conditions.

Future-proof for Mobile Industry 4.0

With EX-certified tablets, chemical and pharmaceutical companies can safely and productively leverage the benefits of digitalization even in sensitive areas. Whether maintenance, plant inspection, or logistics: R8-EX and U11I-EX make mobile data collection and processing in hazardous areas easier, safer, and more productive.
