Mitigating Hazardous Reactions Through Continuous Flow: Sygnature Discovery’s Success with Syrris Asia
Sygnature Discovery has had success using the Asia Flow Chemistry System from Syrris to safely work with two hazardous reagents on a considerable scale.
“Asia provided us with an easy-to-use flow chemistry platform in which to perform this scale-up.”
Syrris, a leading developer of advanced flow chemistry systems, recently published a customer case study featuring Sygnature Discovery, which has successfully completed the synthesis of a nitroarene bearing an acid-sensitive functional group on a decagram scale and the safe reaction of neopentyl iodide with t-butyllithium using the Syrris Asia Flow Chemistry System.
Raminder Mulla, Lead Scientist at Sygnature Discovery’s Nottingham laboratory, oversaw two workflows focusing on the oxidation of an aniline to a nitrate and the safe reaction of neopentyl iodide with t-butyllithium at scale. Using Asia, Sygnature Discovery was able to scale up the oxidation of an aniline to a nitrate by 83% and safely conduct the reaction of neopentyl iodide with t-butyllithium.
Asia was able to provide an easy-to-use chemistry platform that gave Sygnature Discovery greater control over their process than traditional batch reactors, both reducing the cost and risk associated with these applications.
“We couldn’t run oxidation of an aniline to a nitroarene at the desired scale in batch reactors as oxidant would accumulate and possibly detonate. Asia provided us with an easy-to-use flow chemistry platform in which to perform this scale-up, including a syringe pump capable of working against high back-pressures and modules such as the chip heater that could be adapted to work with third-party equipment,” commented Raminder Mulla, Lead Scientist, Sygnature Discovery

"Scaling up with Asia was a simple process."
Syrris develops flow and batch chemistry reactor systems designed to support chemical scale-up and process optimization. Its Asia Flow Chemistry System offers a flexible platform for conducting a wide range of reactions under continuous flow conditions. In the case of Sygnature Discovery, Asia was used to enhance process control, reduce reagent volumes, and safely optimize reactions that would be more challenging to perform in traditional batch reactors.
“Scaling up with Asia was a simple process where we ran the system for longer periods to get our desired results. Asia Syringe Pump’s complete infusion of the syringe contents made purging of residual t-BuLi reagent an easy process, allowing for a highly controlled, productive, synthesis,” added Raminder Mulla, Lead Scientist, Sygnature Discovery
Sygnature Discovery is an integrated drug discovery contract research organization (CRO) headquartered in Nottingham, UK, with additional facilities in Canada.
