Low Emission Modifier Boosts Long-Term Performance for Hot Climate Asphalt

Photo

Clariant's Licomont BS 100 is a low molecular asphalt modifier based on fatty acid derivatives that can increase the life expectancy of road surfaces, particularly in high temperature environments. By improving adhesion and compacting levels within the asphalt mix and increasing the hardness of the asphalt, it ensures optimal resistance to traffic and climate-induced deformation even when processed at the low temperature of 140°C.

The low processing temperature of Licomont modified-asphalt brings costs savings to asphalt producers and environmental benefits by reducing energy consumption during manufacture of the mix, and during transport and paving. Use of a low paving temperature also reduces heat radiation and vapor generation by the modified asphalt, helping to lower CO2 emissions. This contributes to minimizing greenhouse gas emissions in line with stringent German regulations and tightening legislation in Europe.

Licomont BS 100's excellent deformation resistance at high temperatures helps road surfaces withstand the high pressure forces of heavy traffic loads. Resistance to crack formation at low temperatures is also maintained. This reduces the potential for surface damage and wheel tracks which can cause aquaplaning, and improves comfort for road users. Lower maintenance needs mean less travel disruption and knock-on cost savings for road authorities.

The weather resistance of asphalt modified with Licomont BS 100 is improved through its good flow. This ensures a high degree of compacting between asphalt and the minerals during construction which reduces porosity. High flowing asphalt also adds production benefits. Incorporation of Licomont BS 100 into both the asphalt and the mixed material provides lubrication which can help to protect machinery wearing parts.
