Syngenta Acquires Australian Weed Management Specialist

Syngenta Crop Protection has bought Macspred Australia, a specialist in weed management for the forestry, roads, rail, utilities and infrastructure sectors.

The acquisition, described as a “perfect fit” by Mike Parkin, global head of Syngenta Professional Solutions, marks the Swiss-based group’s entry into the forestry products and vegetation markets.

“With their vast experience in the forestry and industrial vegetation managements markets, we aim to better serve our customers in Australia and also globally across other key forestry and landscape markets. With the scale of our network and our cutting-edge R&D capabilities, we are well positioned to bring further innovation to this exciting and growing market,” Parkin said.

The deal gives Syngenta ownership of all products, toll formulation, manufacturing and distributorship sites, warehousing and intellectual property. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Late last month, Syngenta Crop Protection announced it was entering into a collaboration with Biotalys to research, develop and commercialize new biocontrol solutions for managing key pests in a broad variety of crops.

Headquartered in Ghent, Belgium, Biotalys is a spin-off from the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology. The company is focused on creating a new generation of protein-based biocontrol solutions and has developed a proprietary technology platform called Agrobody.
