Sun Chemical Boosts Adhesives with Sapici Buy

Italy’s Sun Chemical, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan’s DIC Corp., has bought compatriot adhesives and polymers manufacturer Sapici and its holding company Finape. Financial terms were not disclosed. The companies formed a strategic alliance in 2017 to market Sapici’s lamination adhesives under Sun Chemical’s brand name.

Sapici said that by joining Sun Chemical and the DIC group, it will be able to leverage synergies in market segments that include coatings, adhesives, elastomers and sealants, as well as widening its product portfolio and strengthening its commercial network worldwide.

For DIC, the acquisition adds adhesives development and production bases in Europe and the Americas. The Tokyo-based group added that Sapici is the first company in the world to have successfully commercialized ultra-low monomer polyisocyanate (ULM) with the lowest possible hazardous substance content. Access to Sapici’s production technologies will give the group a competitive edge in Europe, where needs for ULM are high, DIC said.

According to the Japanese firm, global markets for adhesives are expanding, with Europe and the Americas – together representing half of the overall market – predicted to see further growth as demand for environmentally friendly products increases.  DIC is aiming to double its annual global sales of adhesives by fiscal 2030.
