Canada’s SNC-Lavalin has won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Salalah Methanol Company (SMC) for an anhydrous liquid ammonia plant, including utilities and off-site infrastructure, in Salalah, Oman.

SNC-Lavalin expects to start on the early works program this month. Upon the closure of financing, which is anticipated to occur in June 2017, the Montreal-based contractor will continue with the project’s engineering, equipment procurement, construction and commissioning. SNC-Lavalin’s office in Abu Dhabi will be responsible for delivering the project with support from local and international resources.

Capacity details and a start-up date for the plant, which will use technology from Germany’s Linde have not been disclosed.

SNC-Lavalin has worked in the United Arab Emirates and the greater Middle East region during the past 40 years. “This new contract is testament of our continued commitment to the region and strong expertise in delivering world-class industrial facilities while integrating a wide range of technologies in our projects,” said José Suarez, SNC-Lavalin’s president, Mining & Metallurgy.

In separate news, Kentz Overseas Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin, has been granted a five-year framework agreement for commissioning support services by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). Under the terms of the agreement, which runs from 2017 to 2022, Kentz Overseas will provide a variety of services on system completions, commissioning and start-up activities for major oil and gas projects in Oman.

SNC-Lavalin will also implement customized technical training programs so that Oman can  perform these services independently. Martin Adler, SNC-Lavalin’s president, Oil & Gas, said the agreement is its first with PDO and expands the company’s footprint in the region.
