Optex Innovation Center Launches as Independent Pilot Coater

Optex Innovation Center launches as an independent extrusion coating pilot for flexible packaging.

Optex Innovation Center recently announced its official launch, marking an exciting new chapter for the converting industry’s premier extrusion coating pilot facility. Formerly known as Optex Process Solutions and the SAM-NA Extrusion Technical Center, the new name reflects the company’s mission to serve as the destination for early-stage development, collaboration, and education in the flexible packaging industry.

As part of this evolution, Ed Lincoln has been appointed Operations Manager, bringing decades of experience and a deep understanding of the converting industry. Lincoln’s leadership will ensure that Optex Innovation Center continues to deliver the high-quality service and technical expertise that customers have come to expect. Andy Christie, who has led the extrusion coating pilot lab since 2014, will remain actively involved during the transition to provide continuity and support.

Optex Innovation Center is backed by members of the Siegel family, long-standing advocates for innovation and sustainability in flexible packaging and extrusion coating. Their investment reinforces the company’s commitment to remain an independent resource for the industry. The Siegel family also owns Mica Corporation, a trusted provider of water-based primers and coatings for more than 54 years.

Both businesses will operate independently and uphold the highest standards of confidentiality and customer trust. “At Optex Innovation Center, our focus is on helping customers accelerate innovation in a safe, confidential, efficient, and supportive way,” said Ed Lincoln, Operations Manager. “We provide a collaborative environment where ideas can be tested, refined, and brought to market with confidence.”

Andy Christie, Principal Consultant at Optex Process Solutions, said, “SAM North America established the Extrusion Technical Center in January 2014, and from day one, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with customers from around the world on the development, validation, and commercialization of innovative products and processes in packaging and flat die extrusion. Over the years, Optex Process Solutions has continued to expand these capabilities, and we’ve been fortunate to partner with the Siegel family to carry this vision forward. While stepping away comes with mixed emotions—this work has been both challenging and rewarding every single day—I’m confident the business is in excellent hands and excited to see the next chapter unfold.”
