Lonza Expanding Visp Bioconjugation Capacity to Three Suites

Previously announced bioconjugation expansion in Visp (CH) will now include three multiproduct suites, with commercial manufacturing capacity expected to be operational from 2028. Upgrades to existing bioconjugation manufacturing suites in Visp (CH) will introduce 500-liter single-use capacity in 2027, enabling faster product onboarding and greater flexibility across customer programs.

Lonza, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), recently announced the further expansion of its integrated bioconjugation manufacturing offering. Lonza is combining the flexibility of mid-scale bioconjugation manufacturing with its previously announced large-scale bioconjugation expansion in Visp (CH), which will now include three multiproduct suites. Together, these capabilities will offer customers a scalable manufacturing pathway from clinical development through commercial supply for antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other bioconjugates.

Demand for bioconjugates is increasing as more ADCs and other bioconjugates progress through clinical development towards commercialization. In response, Lonza is expanding its manufacturing network through two complementary investments: converting existing mid-scale bioconjugation manufacturing suites into a standardized single-use platform by 2027 and adding new large-scale commercial bioconjugation capacity, which is expected to be operational from 2028.

Christian Seufert, Head of Advanced Synthesis, Lonza, commented: “As more ADCs and other bioconjugates advance towards commercialization, customers need confidence that manufacturing capacity can grow with their programs.  Lonza’s investments in Visp reinforce our ambition to be the leading CDMO partner for integrated bioconjugation development and manufacturing solutions.”

The mid-scale bioconjugation manufacturing suites with 500-liter single-use capacity provide a flexible manufacturing environment within Lonza’s existing bioconjugation assets, supporting multiple products and programs. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the upgrade will add single-use equipment, chromatography capabilities and parallel manufacturing capacity to support faster campaign changeovers, more flexible planning and a broader range of ADC and bioconjugate programs.

Lonza is building the new large-scale bioconjugation facility at its manufacturing complex in Visp. It will add three multiproduct suites for cytotoxic and non-cytotoxic products, with stainless-steel and single-use manufacturing at scales of up to 1,200 liters. Capacity is expected to be operational from 2028, supporting flexible, high-throughput commercial supply across customer programs, providing security of supply and competitive Cost-of-Goods for ADCs to our customers.

The new suites and the upgrades to existing suites are intended to let Lonza onboard new ADC programs faster and handle a wider range of customer programs. The multiproduct suites can be used for different products, and the site will cover manufacturing from clinical through commercial supply.
