KBR and PKN Orlen Study Plastics Recycling Projects

US technology and engineering group KBR has been awarded a contract by Polish oil and petrochemicals producer PKN Orlen to evaluate the feasibility of plastics recycling projects in Central Europe using KBR’s Hydro-PRT technology. The companies have also signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on developing future projects.

Along with KBR, PKN Orlen will assess implementing Hydro-PRT as the core technology for recycling waste plastics to support its corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) and circularity objectives.

"This contract represents an important milestone for KBR and PKN Orlen to assess the long-term potential of this breakthrough technology," said Doug Kelly, KBR president, technology. "We are confident that Hydro-PRT will enable PKN Orlen to achieve its corporate ESG and decarbonization objectives."

Hydro-PRT is an advanced recycling technology that converts waste plastic into petrochemical and refinery products. KBR offers the technology under an exclusive alliance with Mura Technology that was announced on Jan. 14.

Developed and patented by Mura, Hydro-PRT uses supercritical steam to convert all types of plastics into commercial products. In June, KBR and Mura announced their first joint contract award for the plastics recycling technology from Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. in Japan.
