Henkel and Dow Expand Strategic for Sustainable Adhesives
Henkel Adhesive Technologies and Dow are expanding their long-standing strategic partnership to accelerate decarbonization with a focus on SBTi-related emissions reductions in adhesives production across various technologies.
The first step is to integrate CO₂-reduced raw materials and renewable electricity into the production processes of Henkel's hotmelt adhesive portfolio for the packaging and consumer goods industry. Depending on the product line, the carbon footprint of the products can be reduced by between 20 and 40%.
"Our collaboration reflects Henkel’s ambition to drive meaningful change in industrial sustainability,” said Jenna Koenneke, Sustainability Director at Henkel Adhesive Technologies. “By integrating low-carbon materials and process-emission reduction levers like renewable electricity, we continue to set a precedent for how value chain partnerships can accelerate sustainability.”
The initial implementation of the various projects is already showing positive effects for some hot melt adhesive technologies with an improved emissions profile. These results are part of a broader strategy to scale CO₂-reduced solutions across Henkel's adhesive portfolio in combination with Dow's material science innovations.
“This collaboration demonstrates the demand for low carbon products in the market and the ambition to increase the investments needed to help the industry and value chain reach their net zero goals. We are proud to continue on this journey with Henkel,” said Peter Sandkuehler, Senior Business Sustainability Director at Dow.
The program currently covers raw material supplies for Henkel in Europe and will be expanded to North America in the future. The collaboration is in line with Henkel's climate targets to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030 and 90% by 2045, as well as Dow's decarbonization and growth strategy.
Henkel and Dow will showcase their progress at K2025 in Düsseldorf, where they will host a joint Transformation Talk, “Success story: Reducing product carbon footprint in practice” on October 9 at 14:00 CET on the Dow booth in Hall in Dow building 04.1 outside of Hall 4. The session will explore how collaboration across the value chain can enable scalable climate solutions.
The collaboration with Dow is part of a comprehensive series of sustainability initiatives by Henkel and other partners that demonstrate innovation, cooperation and climate leadership in different regions.
