Fujifilm Buys Entegris’ Electronics Chemicals Business

12.05.2023 - Japan’s Fujifilm has agreed to acquire Entegris’ electronic chemicals business for $700 million. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2023, subject to regulatory approval and other customary conditions.

The business, which sits within Entegris’ Advanced Planarization Solutions division, provides highly specialized chemicals to the semiconductor industry and had pro-forma sales of about $360 million last year. It was acquired with the purchase of CMC Materials in July 2022.

Fujifilm gains about 560 employees worldwide along with seven dedicated manufacturing facilities at sites in Europe, the US and Singapore, one of which will be its first electronic chemicals manufacturing site in Southeast Asia.

The Japanese company said the deal will broaden its portfolio of electronic chemicals, including high purity process chemicals (HPPCs), which are used to etch and clean silicon wafers in the production of semiconductors.

“The combined resources of the two global businesses with a strong talent base and complementary technology platforms will foster the development of next generation HPPC products to further enhance semiconductor performance,” said Tetsuya Iwasaki, corporate vice president and general manager of Fujifilm’s electronic materials division.

According to Fujifilm, the use of HPPCs is anticipated to increase dramatically with the semiconductor industry growing at an annual rate of 11% and the increase in cleaning, etching and drying steps required for more advanced semiconductor fabrication.
