Evonik on Track with PA 12 Expansion

German specialty chemicals producer Evonik says it is on track to complete the ongoing €400 million expansion of its PA 12 portfolio as planned, despite a few logistical challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The first stage of the 50% capacity increase was completed in October, and the plant is now in the commissioning process, the Essen-based company said. Additional units are scheduled to follow in the first quarter of next year, with full completion expected in the first half year.

With output capability of around of 400,000 t/y, Evonik is regarded as the world’s largest producer of the high-performance polyamide used in specialty applications in automotive engineering, gas piping, sports and 3D printing.

“With the new plant complex, we are consolidating our position as a market leader for this high-performance polymer,” said Claus Rettig, who heads Evonik’s Smart Materials division. “PA 12 is part of our growth strategy.”

The company has successfully dealt with minor pandemic-related problems such as interrupted supply chains or entry restrictions for assembly personnel, but no major delays are expected going forward, said Marcus von Twistern, who is overseeing the complete construction project.
