DSM to Buy Brazil’s Prodap

DSM has entered into an agreement to buy Prodap, a Brazilian animal nutrition and technology company. The deal remains subject to customary conditions and is expected to close in 2022. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Prodap offers combined nutrition, consulting and technology services for optimizing ruminant farming operations. The company collects data and develops insights in real time, which it translates into tailored nutritional solutions for customers.

Based in Belo Horizonte, Prodap has operations in the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais. It employs 330 staff and serves more than 5,000 farms throughout Brazil.

The companies said precision farming is growing rapidly, driven by increasing demand for sustainability, efficiency, traceability, and animal welfare in food systems that are under pressure to provide the world’s rising population with animal protein.

“The need for sustainable animal farming has never been greater or more urgent. Precision nutrition is a key pathway to improving the efficiency and sustainability of animal farming, creating value for a range of stakeholders, including farmers and society at large. As such, I’m delighted that we’re joining forces with Prodap to deliver precision farming solutions to our customers, which will contribute to more sustainable animal farming for all,” said Ivo Lansbergen, executive vice president, DSM Animal Nutrition & Health.

DSM said Prodap’s digital products will strengthen and further develop its own offering to reach more markets globally and species, enabling smarter nutritional decision-making through artificial intelligence and other tools. The Dutch group already has Verax, its animal management system that leverages data to provide a deeper understanding of the health, productivity and welfare of animals, and Sustell, an intelligent sustainability service designed to enhance the environmental sustainability of animal protein production.

Last month, DSM and Firmenich announced they were merging, creating a new market leader in nutrition, flavors and fragrances.
