Dow Corning Announces Plans for European Distribution Center

Dow Corning has announced it will invest in a 32,000 square meter (345,000 square feet) energy efficient distribution centre in Feluy, Belgium, to expand delivery capabilities and optimize service for customers throughout Europe and the Middle East. The project will represent a total investment of approximately $45 million (€35.5 million).

"This distribution center will allow us to improve productivity as Europe regains its economic strength and looks to Dow Corning for high-quality silicon-based products," said Jim Whitlock, senior vice president, manufacturing, engineering & global operations. "It is an important investment that demonstrates Dow Corning's commitment to support future growth in Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East."

Construction of the facility is expected to begin in the next month and to be completed by the end of 2011. It is expected to have approximately 130 employees. The Walloon region and the european investment fund will grant Dow Corning €10 million of subsidies to support the company's investment.

The distribution center will be located on a 17 hectare (42 acres) industrial site near the company's business and technology center and production facility in Seneffe. It will be used for storage, handling and distribution of products manufactured by Dow Corning sites in Europe, Asia and the U.S. and will serve customers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and other regions around the world.

"Belgium has a strategic position in the logistics sector and in the heart of Europe and provides access to multiple transportation networks, including road, rail and waterways," said Whitlock.

The new distribution center will meet the highest standards and showcase best practices in environment, health and safety performance, according to Whitlock. The building will use innovative design and Dow Corning technologies, such as structural glazing and vacuum insulation panels, to increase energy efficiency. The structure of the building will also be equipped to support solar panels on the roof.
