Chemelot Site Hit by Another Blaze
12.11.2015 -
A fire at the Chemelot industrial park operated by Dutch chemical producer DSM on Nov. 9 destroyed a storage facility for plastics resins. No injuries were reported, and estimates as to the extent of the damage have not yet been released.
The blaze in a storage hall owned by logistics provider Wim Bosman, which park management said was touched off by welding activities on the unit’s roof, occupied the attention of the site’s fire brigades and alerted those from surrounding areas. Residents of Sittard, Munstergeleen, Lindenheuvel, Schinnen, Spaubeek and Sweikhuizen were advised to remain indoors with windows and doors shut.
Reports point to a series of incidents at the multi-company site this year, with one of the most serious the recent fire in an ammonia plant owned by Dutch fertiliser group OCI Nitrogen. While both of the company’s ammonia plants have restarted, some of the aggregate production units are not expected to be back online before the end of November, reports said.
