We spoke with Haojie Zhang (Founder / Scientific Lead) about FEINST (Field Enhanced Instrument), one of the finalists in the From Lab to Market Challenge.

CHEManager: What is your technology, and what makes it work?

Haojie ZhangMagnetic fields are a promising way to improve electrolysis efficiency for Green hydrogen, but today they are hard to use in practice. FEINST changes that. We integrate the magnetic field directly into a compact electrolysis cell instead of relying on bulky external magnets. This gives hydrogen developers a practical tool to test, reproduce, and scale magnetic-field-enhanced electrolysis.

What problem does your technology solve, and what is the business potential?

H. Zhang: Green hydrogen needs cheaper and more efficient electrolysis, but many cells still lose performance through energy losses, transport limits, and gas bubbles. Magnetic fields can help, but today they are difficult to use in practical systems. FEINST turns this promising effect into a compact cell concept for hydrogen developers, with business potential in electrolyzers, stack components, and sustainable electrochemical processes.

What's the next milestone your team is working towards?

H. Zhang: Our next milestone is to prove the effect in a compact prototype cell for hydrogen electrolysis. We will compare it with standard cells, measure performance gains, and identify where the integrated magnetic field creates the strongest value. In parallel, we are looking for development and pilot partners in electrolysis, hydrogen, and sustainable chemical processing.
