Ucaneo Secures Seed Funding

Berlin-based Start-up Pioneers Direct CO2 Removal Technologies

13.09.2024 - Ucaneo, a provider of innovative direct air capture (DAC) technologies for CO2 removal, has raised €6.75 million in seed funding including grants.

Led by top hardware and energy investors, including SEIF by Energie 360° and IBB Ventures, with new investors like Plug and Play Sustainability Fund. Existing investors such as Grantham Environmental Trust, Carbon Removal Partners, and notable angels like Flixfounders and Pjotr van Schothorst also contributed.

The new funding will help Ucaneo build a major DAC testing facility in Germany and develop their first industrial product, aiming to remove 0.5 GT of CO2 from the air by 2035—equivalent to the weight of all humans on Earth or about 1% of global annual CO2 emissions.

"This is a pivotal moment for our company. The growing recognition of the critical need for CO2 removal technologies, coupled with increasing regulatory support, positions Ucaneo at the forefront of this transformative sector," commented Florian Tiller, Ucaneo Co-founder and CEO. "This funding round testifies our progress and potential, enabling us to quickly build one of the most cost-efficient, scalable, and mass-producible Direct Air Capture systems, delivering a sustainable solution for CO2 removal or utilization processes at any location and scale."

Ucaneo’s advanced electrochemical technology mimics the human lung to manage CO2. Using electricity and a biomimetic solvent, it continuously removes atmospheric CO2 at room temperature, concentrating it into a pure gas for industrial use. This energy-efficient DAC technology works well with renewable energy sources like solar and wind, enabling flexible, on-demand CO2 removal.

"To scale carbon removal, we need accelerated hardware development! Ucaneo's technology is designed for rapid iterations, our own so-called interchangeable modular product architecture. To reach cost-effectiveness already at a smaller scale, we are leveraging proven components, established supply chains, and a modular design suitable for global deployment," said Carla Glassl, Ucaneo Co-founder and CTO.

Ucaneo’s pioneering technology, proven in the lab and supported by extensive TEA (Techno-Economic Assessment) and third-party feasibility studies, aims to achieve costs below €300/tCO2 soon, targeting under €100/tCO2 long-term. By 2026, Ucaneo plans to launch its first industrial-sized product at one of Germany’s largest DAC testing facilities, supported by the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund.

To reach these goals, Ucaneo has moved to the high-tech Campus in Marzahn, led by Berlin.Industrial.Group and MotionLab.Berlin. This campus offers shared resources like machinery, clean rooms, and services such as certification and financing, helping Ucaneo establish a DAC facility in Berlin and position Germany as a leader in climate tech solutions.
