Sasol Restarts Idled Paraffin Unit in Italy, Lifts Supply Restrictions
Sasol International Chemicals has restarted a production unit in Augusta, Italy, that had been idle, and says it will resume normal supply of several chemicals used in cleaning products.

The unit makes normal paraffin, a raw material for two chemicals, linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and linear alkyl sulfonate (LAS). Manufacturers use both to make household cleaners and laundry detergents.
In April, Sasol declared force majeure, a legal notice that a company can’t meet its supply commitments because of events outside its control, on LAB, LAS and related products. It cited geopolitical tensions affecting its sites in Italy and Germany. With the Augusta unit running again, Sasol says supply is more reliable, and it is lifting the restriction.
“This restart reinforces the strategic value of our regional manufacturing footprint and enhances our ability to support customers in key markets. It reflects a disciplined, market-based decision aligned with current demand and business priorities and forms an important part of our strategy,” said Antje Gerber, Executive Vice President of Sasol International Chemicals.
“Increasing our normal paraffin production capacity strengthens our global manufacturing footprint and enhances supply continuity across our asset base,” said Omar Espinosa, Senior Vice President of Commercial for Sasol International Chemicals. “This milestone supports our customers by strengthening the integrated operations and regional manufacturing capabilities that help enable secure, reliable, and responsive supply.”
Sasol says the extra capacity also increases its ability to make chemicals for cleaning and personal care products.
