Mitsui & Co and European Energy Supply OMV with E-Methanol from a PtX Plant
European Energy and Mitsui & Co have entered into a multi-year purchase agreement with OMV through their joint venture, Solar Park Kassø (SPK), for renewable e-methanol from the Kassø e-methanol plant in Aabenraa, Denmark.

With this agreement, one of Europe’s major integrated energy, fuel, and chemical companies joins the growing group of industrial customers sourcing e-methanol from Kassø.
The e-methanol supplied under the agreement is certified in the EU as a renewable fuel of non-biogenic origin (RFNBO). The agreement provides for greenhouse gas savings that significantly exceed the minimum requirements for RFNBO compliance. Kassø is thus demonstrating that renewable fuels can be supplied with a significantly lower carbon footprint than fossil alternatives while simultaneously meeting the requirements of the newly implemented RED III for road transport in the EU.
“We are pleased to welcome another customer for our e-methanol produced in Kassø. This multi-year agreement demonstrates that there is a real and growing market for renewable methanol. Companies are seeking both solutions to meet regulatory requirements and ways to reduce emissions from fuels and industrial processes. For Kassø, the agreement is further commercial validation. We have proven that e-methanol can be produced on an industrial scale. The next step is to build a broad and diversified customer base. Securing a company of OMV’s size and industrial experience is a significant contribution to this development,” says René Alcaraz Frederiksen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy.
“This agreement with OMV is another important milestone for the Kassø e-methanol project. It demonstrates that e-methanol is emerging as a practical, low-carbon solution for a wide range of industries. In addition to applications as marine fuel and in the chemical industry, demand is now also emerging in the transportation fuels sector. This underscores the growing importance of e-methanol as a viable path to decarbonization. “We are convinced that e-methanol offers customers a scalable way to reduce emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure and supply chains,” says Tadaaki Ito, General Manager of the Methanol and Ammonia Division at Mitsui & Co.
The agreement marks the fourth publicly announced off-take agreement related to the Kassø e-methanol plant. The agreement is already being implemented, and the first delivery of e-methanol to OMV has already taken place.
Previously, agreements had already been concluded with A.P. Moller - Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk. Together, these agreements demonstrate the demand for e-methanol across various industries and application areas.
The e-methanol plant in Kassø was inaugurated in May 2025 and has an annual production capacity of 42,000 metric tons. The plant is located directly adjacent to the 304-MW Kassø solar park and uses renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂ to produce e-methanol.
Kassø is the first commercial e-methanol production facility of its kind and provides industrial customers with access to a renewable alternative to fossil-based methanol. The combination of renewable electricity, biogenic CO₂, and industrial-scale production demonstrates how Power-to-X can link renewable energy generation with sectors where direct electrification is difficult to achieve.
