Mitsubishi Chemical Hikes UK EVOH Capacity

Mitsubishi Chemical is planning to increase production of its Soarnol ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) resin at Saltend in the UK.

The project will lift capacity by 21,000 t/y to 39,000 t/y. Construction is due to start in April 2023 and the extra output is expected to be available from July 2025.

Soarnol is a high gas-barrier resin used in packaging materials to help prolong the flavor and quality of foods. Mitsubishi is anticipating “solid growth” in global demand for the resin in the coming years.

The Tokyo-headquartered group said it holds a “significant” share of the global EVOH market, operating three Soarnol sites. As well as the UK, Mitsubishi Chemical produces 10,000 t/y at its Okayama plant in Japan, and 41,000 t/y at its facility in LaPorte, Texas, USA.
