Honeywell UOP has won two separate contracts to supply its C3 Oleflex technology for new plants in Vietnam and China.

The contract with Phu My Plastics Production marks the first award for Honeywell’s propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technology in Vietnam. Honeywell did not disclose any details regarding capacity or scheduled start-up for the plant, which it said would help meet growing domestic demand for plastics both in Vietnam and other southeast Asian countries.

“This new capacity will enable Vietnam to meet its own rapidly growing domestic demand for plastics, supplanting propylene products that it currently imports,” said Bryan Glover, vice president and general manager of Honeywell UOP’s process technology and equipment business.

Phu My Plastics makes laminated PP and PE bags, woven PP sheets and flexible intermediate bulk containers, among other products, which are sold in Vietnam and also exported overseas to markets including Brazil, France, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

A second contract award came from China’s Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, which plans to use the C3 Oleflex technology in a plant to produce 700,000 t/y of polymer-grade propylene. Jiangsu Sailboat is expanding its facility in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu province, where it uses Honeywell UOP’s methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process to produce ethylene and propylene. The additional propylene output will further help China to meet domestic demand for plastics.

The agreement with Jiangsu Sailboat marks Honeywell’s 36th award in China for its Oleflex technology. The company said it has commissioned 31 Oleflex units for on-purpose propylene and isobutylene production since it commercialized the process nearly 30 years ago. Global capacity of propylene produced from Oleflex technology currently stands at roughly 7.3 million t/y.
