Evonik Sells TAeTTOOz Battery Technology to InnovationLab

Evonik is selling the TAeTTOOz materials technology for printable rechargeable batteries to InnovationLab, a company that helped developed it in partnership with the chemical producer’s Creavis “strategic development arm.

Germany-based InnovationLab specializes in the development of printed and organic electronics and offers individual overall solutions from the first concept draft through to industrial production.

In future, Evonik said Creavis plans to focus more strongly on concepts for resource-conserving and sustainable production, as well as high-growth solutions that enable industries to become independent of fossil raw materials.

TAeTTOOz is based on redox-active polymers and can be processed using conventional printing methods to make thin, flexible battery cells that enable electrical energy to be stored without the need for metals or metallic compounds. Battery cells based on the technology have environmental and  safety advantages as they require no liquid electrolyte to function, inherently eliminating leakage.

Typical applications for new products made with the technology are planned to include low-cost IoT sensor labels for packaging and stock management, wireless industrial sensor technologies and self-powered signage solutions. The technology has already been successfully used with printed organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells.

InnovationLab said it is confident it will be able to successfully commercialize the technology.  The company has signed up Heidelberg Printed Electronics as its manufacturing partner. When ready for commercial production, the battery technology is expected to be used in the medical field to monitor vital functions. Sensors with printed batteries also are poised to be used in the field of logistics to monitor sensitive goods.
