Dupont has sold its trichlorosilane (TCS) business and equity interest in the Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) joint venture to Hemlock for $725 million. The business, based in Saginaw County, Michigan, USA, produces TCS, a key raw material for HSC’s high-purity polysilicon. (c) dupont

DuPont Electronics & Imaging has announced plans to expand production for its Kapton polyimide film by up to 20% by the end of the first quarter of 2019. The increase will take place at multiple undisclosed sites in the US and Asia.

The company added that it will also invest in the research and development of new Kapton and Oasis film products for use in mobile devices, hybrid/electric vehicles and telecommunications servers, among others.

“Demand for the unique high-performance qualities of Kapton polyimide film is at an all-time high right now,” said Avi Avula, global business director for interconnect solutions at DuPont Electronics & Imaging. “With our plans to increase capacity and provide new film technologies, we will be able to better serve our customers’ needs as they develop advanced devices and applications of the future.”

New Kapton film technologies are intended to address several major trends in the electronics industry, including requirements for thinner materials and enhanced thermal management properties.

In separate news, DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers (T&AP), part of DowDuPont Specialty Products division, has acquired a new facility in Newark, Delaware, to manufacture Kalrez. The specialized engineered material is used in a variety of sealing applications that need high-temperature performance and excellent chemical resistance.

During the next two years, DuPont T&AP will invest roughly $45 million to raise capacity and transition production to the new facility, which is twice the size of its existing plant in Newark, allowing it to meet demand growth in the semiconductor, electronics and industrial markets.
