BASF increases BDO production in Ludwigshafen

BASF's Intermediates division is increasing supply security for its European customers along the 1,4-butanediol (BDO) value chain.

By gradually increasing production volumes at the BDO plant in Ludwigshafen, BASF is supporting its customers in Europe with a stable and reliable supply while they cope with the effects of the recent BDO anti-dumping proceedings.

Thanks to the highly integrated Verbund structure spanning the entire acetylene value chain, the company's increased BDO production also increases the availability of key derivatives such as BASF 's tetrahydrofuran (THF), polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). This strengthens BASF's position in critical downstream markets, including polymers, solvents, elastomers and performance materials, and enables stable production planning. The focus on production in Ludwigshafen is part of BASF's strategic commitment to the European BDO and derivatives market and is intended to further strengthen the long-term perspective for BASF and its customers.

“In an environment of shifting global markets and growing regionalization, robust and reliable regional production capabilities are becoming increasingly critical for our downstream industries,” explains Verena Siegel, Vice President Global Business Management for Butanediol and Derivatives in BASF’s Intermediates division.

Focus on More Sustainable and Future-Oriented BDO Solutions

As part of its sustainability strategy, BASF is continuously expanding its portfolio of more sustainable products, including biomass-balanced (BMB) variants of BDO, THF, and PolyTHF, which save fossil raw materials and reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF). "By increasing BDO production in Ludwigshafen, we can minimize transport requirements and make optimal use of the efficiency of our Verbund, resulting in a lower PCF," explains Sebastian Spicher, Senior Product Manager for Acetylene and Butanediol. "At the same time, we are developing new solutions that use renewable energy and renewable raw materials." These measures improve the life cycle performance of BDO derivatives and underline BASF's commitment to more sustainable value chains.

BDO as an Essential Building Block

BDO is an important intermediate for many downstream markets, including polymers, textiles, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods. BASF is one of the world's leading producers of BDO and its derivatives and operates two BDO production plants in Ludwigshafen (Germany) and Geismar (Louisiana).
