BASF and GS E&C Sign MOU for CCUS Solutions

BASF and South Korea’s GS Engineering and Construction (GS E&C) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop modular solutions for carbon capture facilities.

The companies said they want to be able to provide individual package solutions from standardized elements for customers from all industries that would allow them to remove CO2 from exhaust gases and process it so that it can be further utilized or stored.

Combining BASF’s patented OASE blue CO2 capture process technology and GS E&C’s specialized engineering capabilities, the German chemical giant said the partners could deliver a modular carbon capture package with optimized capital expenditures and operating expenses “very quickly.”

This, approach, it said, would efficiently shorten the implementation steps of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects from conceptualization to actual operation.

BASF believes its technology can contribute to both sustainability and cost savings for CO2 capture from flue gas, while GS E&C can support carbon neutrality of CO2 emitters by providing a one-stop solution.

Commenting on the plans, Yoon Hong Huh, president of GS E&C’s new business division, said, the companies hope to have a “deep, bilateral relationship and growing partnership” in green energy. “This alliance,” he added, “will work as a gateway to make us a global leader for carbon capture solutions.”

The OASE products are one of BASF’s accelerator products, and, the Ludwigshafen group said they “make a substantial sustainability contribution in the value chain.” “The essence of the technology is that it can be highly customized to meet the intended outcome of every application.
