Arkema and Catalyxx Launch Partnership for Low-Carbon, Bio-Based Acrylic Resins

Arkema and Catalyxx accelerate the transition to lower-carbon footprint acrylic monomers and acrylic resins.

Arkema, a specialty materials manufacturer, and Catalyxx, a producer of bio-based chemicals, announce a strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to develop a new value chain for low-carbon, bio-based acrylic resins by leveraging breakthrough proprietary technology.

Catalyxx is planning to build a first-of-its-kind industrial facility to produce bio-alcohols, including bio n-butanol, from bioethanol. These bio-alcohols, based on a patented technology validated at a demonstration plant in Seville, Spain, offer a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based alternatives.

Arkema is evaluating the use of these bio-alcohols as feedstocks for the commercial-scale production of bio-based acrylic resins with a lower carbon footprint. These resins will serve high-performance applications in coatings, adhesives for new energy solutions, e-mobility, living comfort, and sustainable infrastructure markets.

Richard Jenkins, Senior Vice President, Arkema Coating Solutions, commented: "This partnership is fully aligned with Arkema’s strategy and ambition to deliver ever more sustainable solutions to our customers. By working with Catalyxx, we strengthen our ability to reduce the carbon footprint of our materials and meet the growing demands of environmental regulations and green building certifications."

Joaquin Alarcón, Founder and CEO of Catalyxx, added: "This project is a major milestone for Catalyxx, and we value the trust and shared vision we’ve built with Arkema over the past few years. This new step reinforces our common interest in advancing sustainable materials and supports the continued development of our first commercial plant."

This project marks a key milestone in the transition toward more responsible materials and reinforces Arkema’s commitment to replacing fossil-based raw materials with renewable alternatives—without compromising on performance.
