AppCyclers: Innovative Approach for e-Waste Management

ISC3 Start-up of the Month: April 2023

21.04.2023 - Ghana-based start-up AppCyclers has developed a web- and app-based solution for local electronics waste (e-waste) management services. What distinguishes these innovators is their holistic approach: With this contribution to sustainable chemistry, they not only focus on safe and efficient disposal of e-waste and material recovery. They also educate local communities about the importance of proper disposal and reducing their e-waste footprint.

AppCyclers addresses the link between e-waste management and sustainable development in this way and encourages the locals to make more responsible choices when it comes to electronics by implementing the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. For this reason, International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) has chosen AppCyclers as the ISC3 Start-up of the Month for April 2023.

How does the AppCyclers solution work? The web and app-based e-waste management system of AppCyclers uses data analysis and community sensitization to ensure proper disposal of e-waste. Their solution enables users to easily identify the closest e-waste drop-off points, request pick-ups, and track the progress of the disposal process. The platform also provides a marketplace that connects buyers and sellers of valuable materials such as copper, aluminum, and PBC boards, providing a more efficient and reliable way to access these materials and creating income-generating opportunities for the community.

The whole success story of the ISC3 Start-up of the Month in April 2023 is currently told by the ISC3 on its website at https://www.isc3.org/page/appcyclers

Three questions for AppCyclers founder Agudor K. Agabas:

What led to your solution in Sustainable Chemistry?

Agudor K. Agabas: Our solution in Sustainable Chemistry was driven by our commitment to finding a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach to e-waste management. We recognized the potential of data analysis and community engagement to drive positive change, and we leveraged this approach to create a more sustainable solution.

What does being chosen as ISC3 Start-up of the Month mean to you and your research?

A. Agabas: Being chosen as ISC3 Start-up of the Month is a great recognition of our work and efforts towards sustainable e-waste management. It is an acknowledgement of the impact that we are making in our community and the potential that our solution has to address the global problem of e-waste. The recognition from ISC3 will help us increase our visibility and credibility in the market. It will also give us the opportunity to connect with other start-ups and industry experts. We are grateful for the recognition and support that it brings to our company and our mission.

What’s next up at AppCyclers?

A. Agabas: At AppCyclers, our focus remains on improving and expanding our e-waste management services in Tamale and beyond. We look forward to establishing the necessary infrastructure such as collections and recovery centres, and drop-off points to efficiently enhance our operations, with the goal of making e-waste collection and safe disposal a norm among Ghanaian populace. In the near future, we plan to expand our community sensitization programs to raise awareness about e-waste management and promote responsible disposal of electronic waste. We also plan to expand our operations to other regions in Ghana and eventually to other countries in West Africa. To achieve this, we are looking to forge partnerships with like-minded organizations and investors who share our vision of creating a cleaner and more sustainable future.
