Andritz and HydrogenPro Partner on Electrolyzers

Austrian technology group Andritz and Norwegian green hydrogen company HydrogenPro are working together to scale up the manufacturing and assembly of electrolyzers for the European market.

The collaboration will combine Andritz’s competence in manufacturing and assembly with HydrogenPro’s expertise in high-pressure alkaline electrolyzer (AEL) technology. Andritz will also include HydrogenPro’s technology on a non-exclusive basis in its offering of engineering, procurement and construction services for green hydrogen solutions.

Andritz aims to become a leading global provider of complete green hydrogen plants and solutions based on different electrolysis technologies. We look forward to working with HydrogenPro to contribute to the increase in electrolysis capacities needed to support the emerging green hydrogen economy in Europe, ” said Sami Pelkonen, Andritz’s executive vice president green hydrogen.

Tarjei Johansen, HydrogenPro’s CEO, added that the partnership “is an important step for HydrogenPro towards reaching our target of providing more than 5 GW of electrolysis capacity in five years.”

Last month, HydrogenPro announced that it was also planning to build an alkaline electrolyzer in Texas, USA, more than doubling its capacity to 800 MW. Investment costs are estimated at up to $50 million.

The Porsgrunn-based firm said the US market is a top priority. It noted that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which took effect last August and provides a favorable tax scheme for producers of green hydrogen, had resulted in surging demand. According to Johansen, demand is growing 4-6 times higher than it was before the Act was passed.

“We have great confidence in our technology and systems being an excellent fit for large-scale industrial applications, where we are now seeing an unprecedented increase in demand for green hydrogen following the IRA. Consequently, establishing a manufacturing site to serve the North American market is a natural next step in our global expansion plan, and a very exciting opportunity for our company,” Johansen said.
