Air Liquide Plans Mega Biomethane Plant in US

French multinational industrial gases group Air Liquide has announced it will build its largest-ever biomethane plant in the US. The new plant to be located in Rockford, Illinois, will take the company’s total annual global capacity to 1.8 terawatt hours (TWh) when it starts up by the end of 2023.

The new US facility will produce biomethane from biogas sourced from a solid waste treatment plant on the site that is operated by the company Waste Connections. It will have an annual capacity of 380 gigawatt hours.

Air Liquide is also building another biomethane production unit at a landfill site in Delavan, Wisconsin that will be operational early in the second quarter of 2022. Globally, Air Liquide currently has 21 biomethane plants worldwide with an annual capacity of about 1.4 TWh.

For the two projects, as well as using its own membrane technology, the French gases group will use a complementary technology developed by Waga Energy, a specialist in valorizing biogas from landfill sites.

Air Liquide’s plans for its largest biomethane production worldwide illustrate its determination to accompany customers in the industrial and transportation sectors throughout the energy transition as well as actively contributing to the emergence of a low-carbon society, said Émilie Mouren-Renouard, executive committee member with responsibility for Innovation, Digital and IT, Intellectual Property and the Global Markets & Technologies world business unit.
