Styrenics giant Ineos Styrolution has taken the final decision to investment in a new 100,000 t/y plant for acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) polymer at its Bayport, Texas, site in the US.  Tentative plans were announced in April of this year.

The Frankfurt, Germany-based company said the new plant due to start up in 2021 will cement its position as the only global producer with ASA capacity in all world regions.  Concurrently, ABS capacity of ABS polymers at the plant in Altamira, Mexico, will be increased by 70,000 t/y.

The plastics maker does not disclose total production levels for the styrenic polymer.

US chemical engineering firm WorleyParsons has been awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, and construction of the Texas facility.

The additional ASA capacity at both sites will allow more flexible production of specialty grades to meet growing demand in the Americas, Alexander Glueck, president of Ineos Styrolution Americas, said.
