Fertiberia to Build Green Ammonia Plant in Sweden

Spanish fertilizer group Fertiberia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swedish region of Norrbotten and its investment agency to develop a green ammonia plant. The project, dubbed “Green Wolverine”, will be located in Lulea-Boden and produce 1,500 t/d.

Start-up is scheduled by 2026, enabling Sweden to become both self-sufficient in fertilizer production and one of the world’s first exporters of low-carbon ammonia and fertilizers. Sweden has no local fertilizer production and imports about 600,000 t/y, according to Fertiberia.

The Spanish group will spend more than €1 billion on the project, which it said will be the world’s first 100% green and emission-free ammonia and fertilizer site. The facility will use electrolysis technology with operations powered by wind and hydroelectric energy. Fertiberia added that Norrbotten offers “exceptional conditions” with its entire electricity generated from renewable sources.

Right now, said CEO Javier Goñi, Fertiberia is working on the detailed design and engineering and is searching for partners who might contribute to making the project a reality.
