Additional details of the massive cracker complex being built by Russia’s Baltic Chemical, a wholly owned subsidiary of Russian gas group RusGasDobycha, at Ust-Luga near the Gulf of Finland have emerged.

For the six reactor lines of the project announced last month and set for start-up in stages between 2023 and 2024, the company has selected Univation Technologies’ Unipol PE process. Each of the units will be designed to produce about 500,000 t/y, giving a total designed capacity of 3 million t/y of PE.

The Baltic complex will have access to Univation’s various technologies, including Acclaim for unimodal HDPE, Prodigy for bimodal HDPE grades and Xcat for advanced metallocene LLDPE.

The Russian company said the technologies will give it the capability to supply a wide range of HDPE and LLDPE applications, including LLDPE for blown and stretch film, MDPE for rotomolding and HDPE for pipe, injection and blow molded products.

In October, Baltic Chemical signed a front end engineering design and engineering, procurement and construction contract with China National Chemical Engineering. McDermott International’s Lummus Technology division is supplying engineering and the license for olefin production and recovery technology.
