Included in the transaction are three of Nouryon’s three European locations for packing and distribution of specialty salt  at Hengelo, the Netherlands, Mariage, Denmark, and Gothenburg, Sweden. Following the sale, Nouryon will supply Salins with high-purity vacuum salt from its mining operations near Hengelo and Mariager.

Salins said the takeover of the Nouryon business and the long-term supply agreement will allow it to develop its core businesses and better serve its customers in the salt market. In addition, it said the transfer will boost the company’s development of specialty salts in the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. 

With capacity to produce 4 million tonnes of salt annually, the French company has production facilities in Spain, Italy, Portugal and in several African countries in addition to its French home base. The company also makes a cosmetics brand, ECLAE, using Dunaliella Salina alga extracted from Aigues-Mortes sea water.

In January 2021, Nouryon rebranded its industrial chemicals business as Nobian, saying the change would allow the subsidiary to develop its integrated European value chain for essential base chemicals under its own name as Nouryon continues to focus on growing its leading position in global specialty chemicals.

Along with the activities being divested and chloromethanes, used to manufacture disinfectants, the business headquartered in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, regards itself as a European leader in lightweight durable plastics, aluminum, pharmaceuticals and other products.
