Heraeus Acquires Umicore’s Platinum API Business outside of South America

21.01.2025 - In a move to strengthen its position and product portfolio, Heraeus has announced the acquisition of Umicore's business with platinum-containing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) outside South America. With immediate effect, the business is transferred to Heraeus Precious Metals, the group's precious metals division.

According to Heraeus, the deal does not include Umicore’s platinum API business or production facility in South America and other, non-platinum molecules.

“Our mission is to reliably provide customers with the highest quality products – ensuring effective treatment for as many cancer patients as possible,” said Andrea Lamberti, head of Pharmaceutical Ingredients at Heraeus Precious Metals. “This is not just a business opportunity; it's a commitment to excellence and care. By merging our strengths, we create synergies that allow us to offer a robust portfolio at competitive prices, all while maintaining our uncompromising standards of quality.”

Michael Schwarz, commercial director of Umicore’s global API business, added: “Heraeus Precious Metals is the ideal partner for our customers outside of South America as they share our commitment to excellent quality, in a transaction that provides synergies for all parties.”

In 2021, Heraeus Precious Metals already expanded its platinum API production in Hanau, Germany, with a multi-million-euro investment. The increased capacity will further enable the company to respond promptly to high market demand in the future, the company said.
