Evonik Hikes Capacity for Biodegradable Polymers
27.12.2016 -
Evonik is expanding capacity for its Resomer and Resomer Select biodegradable polymers in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, and Darmstadt, Germany. The move, said the German specialty chemicals group, is part of a global expansion plan aimed at solidifying its leadership in the bioresorbable polymer market.
The poly-lactic-glycolic-acid (PLGA) Resomer copolymers are mainly used to make bioresorbable medical devices and controlled-release formulations for parenteral drug delivery.
A new facility will be constructed adjacent to Evonik’s existing plant in Birmingham, which will increase output as well as provide additional production clean rooms and a laboratory for polymer contract research projects. Commissioning is scheduled for late 2018.
In addition, another production line will be added at Darmstadt, Germany, where Evonik opened its manufacturing site for Resomer products in 2014. A second applied technology laboratory for medical devices is also due to open at Darmstadt in late 2016.
Paul Spencer, head of biomaterials at Evonik’s Health Care Business, said global demand for biodegradable polymers is expected to continue growing in the coming years and the additional capacity at two locations will strengthen Evonik’s role as a reliable partner for its customers.
Investment costs and capacity details were not disclosed.
