BASF Starts Initial Production of MDI in China
28.08.2015 -
BASF has started its first production of MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) at its new 400,000 t/y plant in Chongqing, China. Production will be ramped up gradually in line with market demand, the company said.
MDI is an important component of polyurethane (PU) which is used to improve insulation, make lighter materials for cars, and help save energy in buildings. The plant’s output will support these key industries in China’s western regions, noted BASF.
MDI is also produced by BASF in Caojing, Shanghai, as well as in Antwerp, Belgium; Yeosu, South Korea; and Geismar, Louisiana, USA.
