What’s Next for Pharma Supply Chains?

Explore at PHARMAP 2025

21.03.2025 - Sudden shifts in demand, supply shortages and global collapse have put immense pressure on pharmaceutical logistics. To address these challenges, PHARMAP 2025 brings together industry experts to discover AI-driven supply chain optimisation, strategic logistics partnerships and digital solutions that enhance efficiency and resilience in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The pharmaceutical industry has long-faced supply chain vulnerabilities, but the COVID-19 pandemic exposed and intensified these challenges. Disruptions from accelerated clinical trials, shifting manufacturing priorities, lockdowns and ongoing shortages of raw materials and labor have significantly impacted drug availability. Additional factors, such as rising inflation and geopolitical instability, have further strained global supply chains, highlighting the urgent need for new strategies and technologies to ensure supply chain resilience.

According to Global Data, supply chain pressures have risen substantially since 2020, making it clear that reforms are necessary. However, restructuring it within the pharmaceutical sector presents unique complexities, as patient safety and product reliability must remain key focuses.

Appealing these problems, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Packaging Congress (PHARMAP) 2025, taking place on 14-15 April in Berlin, features a dedicated session on supply chain innovation. The Congress annually gathers industry leaders to explore solutions to the most pressing issues of the industry and share best practices from top market players.

One of the featured speakers, Christopher Pawlak (External Manufacturing Lead Senior Manager at Bayer) delivers a speech on AI and complexity management in supply chains. His presentation explores how AI-driven technologies enhance adaptability, predict disruptions and implement strategic solutions. “We are going to examine case studies where AI has successfully streamlined operations, reduced waste and improved logistical decision-making in pharmaceutical manufacturing,” highlighted Pawlak.

The discussion also addresses the ethical considerations and challenges of integrating AI into pharmaceutical supply chains.

LEO Pharma’s representatives -Marta Barletta (Senior Tactical Planner) and Giovanni Tocci (Tactical Planner) - expand on the role of AI in balancing supply chain necessities, costs and competitive pressures. They emphasize how AI can optimize root cause analysis and scenario planning, helping companies improve site performance and operational efficiency.

Another participant of the session is Hassan Jamaleddine, Director of Supply Chain for the Middle East & North Africa at NewBridge Pharmaceuticals. He shares insights on choosing the right third-party logistics (3PL) provider,  outlining essential selection criteria, including reputation, flexibility, technological capabilities and sustainability. The speaker also addresses how the right partnerships drive efficiency, reduce costs and enhance service quality.

Ekaterina Gerasimova, Head of Logistics at Takeda, also takes part in the discussion with a case study on Takeda’s supply chain digital transformation journey. She emphasizes how the company integrates process automation, real-time data visibility and simulation technologies to build a future-ready supply chain.

“By leveraging digital tools, Takeda is strengthening operational efficiency and resilience, ensuring its supply chain remains agile in a rapidly changing landscape,” noted Gerasimova.

With supply chain stability becoming an increasing concern for the pharmaceutical sector, PHARMAP 2025 provides a space for industry leaders to discuss cutting-edge solutions, from AI-driven optimization to strategic 3PL partnerships and digital transformation initiatives. The Congress explores effective approaches for ensuring efficiency, resilience, and innovation in pharmaceutical logistics.
