Grupa Azoty Plans New Ammonium Nitrate Plant at Polish Fertilizer Site

22.08.2023 - Polish chemical company Grupa Azoty wants to build a new concentrated ammonium nitrate solution plant at its site in Tarnów, Poland. The company announced that it has signed a contract with Thyssenkrupp Uhde for the preparation of licensing documentation and the supply of all process equipment for the plant.

The new facility is expected to enhance production efficiency by substantially decreasing the energy intensity of the fertilizer manufacturing process and help to reduce energy consumption in the production process by over 250,000 GJ/y, Grupa Azoty said.

The plant, to be built on the existing premises of the company’s Fertilizer business unit, will replace the existing deteriorated and more energy-intensive plant and secure raw material for further production of nitrate fertilizers in Tarnów. Production capacity will be 1,500 t/d of concentrated ammonium nitrate solution (100% equivalent) with a concentration of 94% or 86%.

Grupa Azoty expects that the plant will not only reduce the operating costs of the facility by lowering the consumption of basic raw materials, but also reduce the environmental impact of fertilizer production and the amount of wastewater generated in the process.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the late first quarter/early second quarter of 2024, with completion in the fourth quarter of 2025.
