Topsoe Establishes Dedicated Green Hydrogen Arm
The company said it is “determined to take a leading position in the burgeoning green hydrogen space”, which the International Energy Agency forecasts could potentially fulfil 17% of global energy demand by 2050.
Green hydrogen also forms a key part of the European Green Deal, supporting the region’s decarbonization efforts and its clean energy transition. The gas has several uses, such as storing renewable energy and as a fuel and chemical feedstock, among others.
Topsoe is already working on several projects to produce green hydrogen, green ammonia, green methanol and green fuels. In March, the company announced its intention to build a large-scale electrolyzer to meet rapidly increasing demand, although it did not disclose the location. Described by Topsoe as the largest of its kind, the facility is scheduled to be operational by 2023.
The company is also involved in a $5 billion green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia. The project, named Helios, includes the world’s largest ammonia loop based on Topsoe technology.
Another green ammonia facility is proposed in Germany in a joint venture with Aquamarine Investment Partners. Topsoe and Aquamarine entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in March to build an electrolyzer producing green hydrogen for conversion into green ammonia. The plant is expected to be operational by 2024.
