US-based food safety company Neogen has acquired Rogama Indústria e Comércio, a Brazilian developer and manufacturer of rodenticides and insecticides. Financial terms were not disclosed.

With annual revenues of around $8 million, Rogama supplies more than 70 registered pest control products to Brazil’s agronomic, professional and retail markets. The company is also a major supplier to public health agencies and has a long-term partnership with the Pan American Health Organization.

Headquartered in Pindamonhangaba, near São Paulo, Rogama’s operations will be managed by Neogen do Brasil, also located near São Paulo.

Jason Lilly, Neogen’s vice president of corporate development, said the acquisition further solidifies Neogen as a global leader in agricultural biosecurity. He commented: “This capability will complement the pest control development efforts currently ongoing at other Neogen facilities and enhance the products and expertise we can offer across global markets.”

Pierre Belhadj, Neogen’s country manager for Brazil, added that the ability to manufacture in Brazil for local customers provides significant advantages over shipping products from the US or elsewhere. These advantages, he said, related not just to cost but also to the ability to respond rapidly to outbreaks of potentially devastating diseases within the country’s livestock and poultry industries.

US financial analyst Zacks said Rogama will strengthen Neogen’s biosecurity business, which started with the acquisition of rodenticides, cleaners and disinfectants from ConAgra in 2003, and fortify its overseas footprint.

According to Indian research firm Markets and Markets, the global rodenticides market is projected to be worth around $1.23 billion by 2022, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 4%.
